Crystal CG's fly-throughs feature in Wimbledon Broadcasts
You may have noticed the animated model of Wimbledon leading into live match footage during the Championships last week.
These clever fly-throughs of SW19's most famous site are the result of a joint project between the BBC’s Research & Development team and Crystal. This project marks the first time animation incorporating live broadcast footage has been successfully used to enhance a real-life event in a broadcast environment.
To create the digital scenes of SW19’s most famous site, the Crystal CG animation team pre-rendered over 28 3D animations, centred upon the views from seven courts and the now famous ‘Henman Hill’. BBC R&D’s unique software was used to match the co-ordinates of both the 3D animated ‘camera-views’, and the actual, broadcast cameras on the courts, allowing the animations to morph directly into live action footage of the matches from the selected courts.
